Best Honey Butter Rolls: 3-Ingredient Make-Ahead Dinner

  • Author: jonathan_morgan
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 to 12 servings

Description

Soft, fluffy, and golden honey butter rolls made with simple pantry staples. These make-ahead friendly rolls are perfect for busy weeknights or lazy weekends, offering a sweet and savory comfort food experience.

Ingredients

  • Self-rising flour (White Lily recommended for softness)
  • Honey (good quality, liquid)
  • Unsalted butter (real butter, not margarine)
  • Whole milk (or any milk)
  • Extra honey for glaze
  • Sea salt flakes (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour. Make a well in the center.
  2. Pour in the milk and half of the honey. Mix gently until a soft dough forms, about 2-3 minutes. Do not overmix.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until soft and slightly tacky.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 to 12 equal pieces and roll each into a ball.
  5. Place the dough balls in a 9×13 inch baking dish, leaving space between them or pushing them together for pull-apart rolls.
  6. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. While rolls rise, melt butter in a saucepan or microwave and stir in the remaining honey to create the glaze.
  9. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cover loosely with foil if browning too fast.
  10. Immediately upon removing from the oven, brush generously with the warm honey butter glaze.
  11. Serve warm.

Notes

For make-ahead: Shape rolls, cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking. If using all-purpose flour, add 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt per cup of flour. Do not overmix dough to ensure tender rolls. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
