Description
Crispy, golden homemade taco shells made in a slow cooker using simple pantry staples like corn tortillas, milk, and oil. This budget-friendly method yields a superior texture compared to store-bought shells.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12–15 small corn tortillas
- 1/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1 tablespoon neutral oil (vegetable, canola, or avocado)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon taco seasoning (chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika)
- 1 teaspoon lime zest (optional)
Instructions
- Stack corn tortillas and place them in a large bowl. Lightly brush with oil if they are very thin.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together milk, oil, salt, taco seasoning, and lime zest (if using) until well combined.
- Pour the milk mixture over the tortillas and gently toss to coat every tortilla evenly. Avoid tearing them.
- Let the tortillas sit for 5-10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Arrange the tortillas in the slow cooker pot in a single layer or two loose layers. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or LOW for 4-5 hours until dry, golden brown, and crisp.
- Check for doneness after 2 hours on HIGH; they should be dry to the touch and bendable but not soft.
- Remove with tongs and place on a wire rack to cool completely. Do not stack while hot to prevent sogginess.
Notes
Ensure tortillas are completely dry before storing to maintain crispness. Cool on a wire rack, not a plate, to allow air circulation. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a dry skillet to restore crispness; avoid microwaving.
