Copycat Hawaiian Rolls: Best Cheap Buns Swap

  • Author: jonathan_morgan
  • Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

Homemade Hawaiian rolls that mimic the soft, sweet texture of store-bought buns using simple pantry ingredients. This budget-friendly recipe yields pillowy, golden-brown rolls perfect for sliders or side dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g (4 cups) All-Purpose Flour
  • 60g (1/3 cup) Granulated Sugar
  • 7g (1 packet) Instant Yeast
  • 240ml (1 cup) Warm Milk
  • 55g (4 tbsp) Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 55g (4 tbsp) Unsalted Butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 30g (2 tbsp) Sugar (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Warm milk until lukewarm (110°F / 43°C). Stir in sugar and instant yeast, then let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, and salt. Make a well in the center.
  3. Add eggs, softened butter, vanilla extract, and the yeast-milk mixture to the dry ingredients.
  4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic (by hand or stand mixer).
  5. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll into balls and place seam-side down in a greased 9×13 inch pan.
  7. Cover and let rolls rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) during the last 15 minutes.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C).
  9. Immediately brush tops with melted butter. Optionally brush with sugar glaze while hot.
  10. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use a kitchen scale for accurate flour measurement. Ensure butter is softened, not melted, for the dough. If your kitchen is cold, rise the dough in an oven with the light on. Rolls can be frozen for up to 2 months.
