Description
Replicate the pillowy soft, slightly sweet fried dough of Raising Canes at home with this foolproof copycat recipe. It features a par-bake and fry technique for the perfect texture that holds up to dipping sauces.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ¼ cups (300 ml) warm water
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 to 3 ½ cups (360–420 grams) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus extra for frying)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the beaten egg, salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, stirring until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Divide dough into two equal halves. Roll each into a 12-inch log. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 20 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Par-bake the logs for 10 minutes, then remove and let cool for 5 minutes.
- Heat about 2 inches of neutral oil in a heavy pot to 365°F (185°C).
- Carefully lower one log into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove fried bread and place on a paper towel-lined plate. Immediately brush with melted butter. Cut into chunks and serve warm.
Notes
Ensure oil temperature stays between 350°F and 375°F to prevent greasy or burnt bread. Do not rush yeast activation. Serve immediately for best texture. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in an air fryer.
