Soft Homemade Hoagie Rolls: 5 Ingredients for Cheap!

  • Author: jonathan_morgan
  • Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

These soft, pillowy homemade hoagie rolls are incredibly cheap to make using just five simple pantry ingredients. They are sturdy enough for heavy subs, stay soft for days, and offer a perfect balance of crispy exterior and chewy interior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g (4 cups) All-Purpose Flour
  • 7g (1 packet) Active Dry Yeast
  • 300ml (1 ¼ cups) Warm Water
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil
  • Flour for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and stir gently. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: Add salt and oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, starting with half and mixing with a wooden spoon. Switch to hands as it thickens, adding the rest slowly until the dough is slightly sticky but pulls away from the bowl sides.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes by pushing away and folding back until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Shape dough into a ball, place in the bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 6-inch oval, pinch ends to seal, and place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet with space between them.
  6. Second rise: Cover rolls loosely and let rise for 30 minutes until puffy. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) during the last 15 minutes.
  7. Bake: Brush tops lightly with water or oil. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool: Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Ensure water temperature is between 105°F and 115°F to activate yeast without killing it. Do not skip kneading to ensure soft texture. If rolls brown too fast, tent with foil. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
